The Shark Fisherman

The Shark Fisherman

by David Turner

Much has been written in recent times about shark fishing in Cornwall in the sixties and seventies, and much of it is inaccurate. This book puts the record straight with first hand knowledge. The author was in his late teens/early twenties at the time and is now one of a dwindling number of anglers who experienced the great ambition of all shark anglers of that era, to catch a mako. The book graphically describes the epic battles with two makos caught in very different conditions.
It describes how the author was first introduced to fishing by his father at the age of four and how he progressed through river and lake fishing until his first shark fishing trip. His initial ventures into shark fishing were less than successful but perseverence paid off. It goes on to recount many shark fishing experiences as well as some, occasionally hazardous, adventures during the author’s time as a commercial crewman and skipper.
Many of the catch records of that era have been lost with the passage of time. It is hoped that this book will give a lasting account of at least some of the story of that period of angling history.

David Turner is, arguably, the most successful British shark fisherman ever. He is one of only a handful of anglers to have boated blue, mako and porbeagle sharks exceeding 100lb in British waters. Between the mid 1960s and 1970s he caught well over one hundred sharks (“I stopped counting when I reached the one hundred”). He won the SACGB Micky Wonnal Trophy for the runner up to the best shark of the year twice, and the best shark for June twice. In the short lived Bacardi Rum Contest which presented cash prizes for the biggest sharks caught each year, he won more than any other angler including overall winner in 1971, and biggest shark for June twice. With the Falmouth Shark Angling Club he won just about everything, most of them more than once: most sharks caught, best specimen, first over 100lb for the season, best mako, etc. After this he took up commercial fishing and, following a spell as crewman on another boat, became skipper of his own boat.
With the demise of the fish stocks off Cornwall he set up his own photography business and still runs it today specializing in aerial photography and surveys for the construction industry.

A donation from each book sold will be given to The Shark Trust the UK charity for shark conservation. The Trust works to advance the worldwide conservation of sharks through science, education, influence and action... see http://www.sharktrust.org/
